Mini Mecca Haul

Hey there!

If you haven’t seen my previous post you may not be aware that I am currently sunning it up in Australia and since I’m here I thought I’d have a little look around and see what makeup I could grab that might not be available in the UK. Thankfully for me the MYER store near to where I’m staying just opened up a Mecca and I was straight over there to see what they had on offer. For the most part a lot of the brands are available (and cheaper) in the UK, however it was nice to have a little look at brands like Hourglass which we don’t really have in store to see in person. Showing some restraint I picked up just three things so I thought I’d share them with you, and eventually I’ll let you know what I think of them! I have also picked up some more ‘drugstore’ makeup which I’ll either do in another haul or do separate posts on them.

The first thing I picked up was something that I wanted but didn’t necessarily need. I had brought a selection of different lipsticks with me but I wasn’t really sure I wanted to wear any of them for my friends wedding this coming weekend. As I was being shown around a few different things with one of the sales assistants she showed me a few products by Too Faced. We do have Too Faced in the UK though I’ve never really looked at or tried any of their products and so I was interested to see what she had to say. I told her I was looking for something long wearing so I don’t have to worry about touching up too much and instantly I fell in love with this shade of the Too Faced Melted liquified lipstick in ‘Melted Fig’. It’s a medium sort of plum/purple shade with a somewhat pink tone to it and has a more glossy finish. I’ve tried this out once and so far I really like the applicator – it has a nice shape that makes it easy to apply and you can choose how much product to distribute onto the spongey end. The way I wore this was to apply one even coat, blot it, then apply some more to get a more full coverage finish. I found by doing this it left you with a sort of stain so as it wears it looks more even. Either way, I’ll be sure to do a proper review with swatches etc once I’ve given it a good go.

IMG_0356 IMG_0358

Next up is another Too Faced product but is something I’ve been looking for for quite a while now. Because I have oily skin I’ve been looking for a powder that is in a compact with a mirror, and preferably with a space for a sponge that I could just put in my handbag for topping up and mattifying throughout the day. I was shown a few different varieties in the store but this was one that really caught my attention. Aside from the beautiful packaging and the fact that it smells like chocolate (I actually think I’m falling in love with Too Faced products!), it basically ticked all the boxes for what I wanted, and the biggest plus: it comes in a shade fair enough for my English Rose complexion! Technically this is a powder foundation with a medium to full coverage but this just means I can use it both as a top up and as a foundation, since we did try it in store over my foundation and it didn’t go cakey as far as I could tell. Again, I’ll have to let you know how it goes when I properly try it out, but for now let’s just admire how beautiful this is.

IMG_0359 IMG_0360 IMG_0361 IMG_0363 IMG_0369

Last up is something I got simply because I wanted to try out this brand, and that is the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush in the shade ‘Incandescent Electra’. I have heard so so much about the Ambient Lighting Powders and Blushes and lusted after them for quite some time (I had my eye on the Ambient Lighting Palette but decided I should probably pass it up on this occasion) and after seeing them in person I knew I was going to be going home with one. Since I don’t actually wear blush because I was never really sure about what I wanted to go for, the assistant showed me the ones available and we decided on this beautiful cool peach shade. Again, the packaging is beautiful and sleek, and the marbled effect is just stunning so I really can’t wait to give this a go!

IMG_0373 IMG_0374 IMG_0375

So that’s all that! Like I said, I do have a few more makeup buys to share with you but that’s for another day. If you’ve tried any of these products let me know what you think of them. Also if you can recommend a good blush brush that would be fab!

Hope you’re all doing well! Let me know in the comments.

Talk to you later!

Australia – Week One

Hey there!

So I’m currently sat outside on my friends porch, it’s about 33’C, there’s a gentle breeze in the air, and I can’t believe I’ve already been in this fantastic country for just over a week. My first week has been a little lazy, this holiday being more of a friends and family holiday than a touristy holiday, but it’s been lovely. On Sunday we had my friends hens high tea – the hen party that’s more suitable for family members and nannas before our girls hen night this coming weekend – and yesterday evening we went down to the harbour to watch the sun set and I had churros for the first time (a lot of last night was spent in a chocolate fondue induced coma whilst watching Rizzoli & Isles). Anyways, there has been other things that have happened so far; catching up with old friends, meeting new friends, walks out in the sunshine, lots of TV box sets, a few cheeky makeup purchases that I’ll probably talk about when I’m back in the UK, and other bits and bobs, but I just thought I’d share with you some photos from last night.

IMG_0291 IMG_0292 IMG_0296 IMG_0304 IMG_0305 IMG_0306 IMG_0311 IMG_0316

PS. I’m not good at taking artsy photos so this is what you got. I do have a nice new camera though so they are in beautiful HD. I have been taking a few video shots, not vlogging, so I may or may not put it together into some sort of disjointed representation of my trip. I don’t know yet. But yes, look out for more posts on the rest of my trip because I probably will put something up, however I probably won’t be putting up photos from the wedding events because I don’t know whether other people will want me to – so you know, better safe than sorry.

Hope you’re all doing well! Do let me know in the comments.

Reflection

Hey there!

Remember me? No, don’t blame you. Once again it has been quite a while since a post has gone up on Beck In A Blog. There has been many reasons behind this, but mostly it’s just because I didn’t want to write a blog post. I know this may not be what people want to hear, because bloggers are meant to be happy and post cute pictures and…well, I don’t know. I don’t know if I really am a blogger. Don’t get me wrong, I do really enjoy it when I get into the swing of things, but sometimes I just feel the pressure to be constantly posting and to be constantly putting out good content – especially because myself, as a perfectionist, won’t allow anything to go public if I’m not completely with how it looks at the time. I guess you could say that lately I’ve been reflecting on a lot of things, and to be honest I don’t really know if this post is making an sense at all. But I’d like to think I’m generally quite personal with my readers. (Oh speaking of which, a couple weeks ago I hit 500 followers! Can you quite believe it?!) I do always keep you updated on what I’m doing with my life be that family, relationships, work, and many other aspects of my life, and recently one of the bigger factors in my life changed.

Me and my boyfriend broke up.

Like I said, if you’ve been reading my blog for a while you’ll know that I spoke constantly about how I was working (sometimes more than one job at once) to save up money and move back down to London to move in with my boyfriend. Well clearly that’s not the case anymore. There’s not really much of a story or any gossip in terms of the end of our relationship, neither of us did anything terrible, neither of us cheated, neither of us told the other we didn’t love them anymore, nothing like that. I guess it was more like a gentle decline. I suppose you could say we drifted apart, became different people. That’s what people usually say, isn’t it? I think that works for us. In the end I think it probably was my ‘fault’. I decided that perhaps the plan we always had wasn’t really what I wanted any more, and really I don’t feel like I should be the one to compromise my job, my friends, my family, and he didn’t want to do the same. So sometimes it comes down to making the decision of what will make us happier both right now, and in the long run, because to be honest I don’t think either of us are particularly happy right now.

I actually initially thought about writing this post because I recently watched a video on YouTube by Hazel Hayes (Chewing Sand) where she shared her moments from the month and talked about how she was going through the same thing as I was. I bawled like a baby. It’s been over a month since we broke up and I don’t think I ever had that stage all girls are meant to have where you stay in bed eating ice cream straight from the tub and crying over Bridget Jones’s Diary. I feel like that’s allowed when you end a four year relationship right? I sort of feel like I was pushing it to the back of mind and just pretending it never even happened. Because then that means it’s not real. And of course that’s not a healthy way of looking at things – I know that. But it’s a lot easier than accepting your life has been turned upside down. I feel somewhat numb, and kind of empty, and I know that sounds really very sad but don’t feel sorry for me because I’m not the first person to go through a breakup and I certainly won’t be the last. I think I just need to write this for me – my form of venting – because isn’t that what I started this blog for in the first place? No it’s no makeup look, or beauty review, or anything cute and girly but this is what’s going on right now with me. But I can promise you there will be much more cute and girly stuff to come on the blog pretty soon because this isn’t me packing it in or anything. I’ll get back to this eventually.

So moving on, the time is about 6:45am right now and I’m currently sat in a Costa at Heathrow airport in London, one eye on the departures board waiting to find out what gate I’m departing from. I’m heading to Abu Dhabi and then on to Perth, Australia and I shall stay there for the next three and a half weeks – and Lord know’s I need it. It feels a little like making an escape, but also this was somewhat of a planned trip. My Australian bestie, Madi, is getting married and of course I wouldn’t miss that for the world.  Although I’m already looking at all the destinations on the departures board and planning where I want to go next.

So there you go. That’s me right now. A little sad, a little empty, but also a little optimistic. Because right now I’m looking out at the twinkly little lights and the planes taking of to exciting destinations and I know that if anything the next three weeks of my life will be wonderful, and I have the most amazing friends and family waiting for me back home too.

I love you all. Do let me know, how have you been?

Talk to you later.

My Hair-O-Scope!

Hey there!

So recently I found out about a company called Madison Reed who have ‘re-engineered permanent colour to give women everywhere a healthier, high performance option at home’, and as someone who has been to the hairdressers less than 5 times in her life, being able to have healthier colour that I can achieve at home is something that really interests me. I am also super indecisive when it comes to my hair, it’s been various shades of blonde and brown, as well as red, plum, and more recently, various shades of blue and purple. Madison Reed even have a colour advisor quiz that takes you from what type of hair you have to what result you want – something I wish I had when I started messing about dying my own hair!

I was also recently sent my Hair-O-Scope to see whether I think my zodiac sign reflects my own hair. Now I won’t lie, I have never been one for horoscopes since I never really got the idea that such a vast world of very different people could be generalised into twelve different signs, but since speaking to new colleagues and researching more into my own sign it’s kind of scary how accurate some points are! Being born in January my sign is Capricorn, and this is what my hair-o-scope has to say…

Capricorn
So the one thing I would say is that I wouldn’t consider myself to be a leader, but apart from that, well it’s pretty much me! I’ve been growing my hair out for years now and there’s been so many times I’ve wanted to cut it all off, but I just knew I’d definitely regret it. Having naturally super straight hair it’s definitely usually smooth and pretty easy to control, and generally my hair is something that get’s complimented quite a lot! Below is how my hair is currently; a sort of faded purple/blue/green ombre that I’m trying to get rid of in the run up to a very fancy wedding. I do feel bad for my poor hair – it doesn’t quite get the attention that it deserves having had years of colour and bleach, and hair cuts that are very few and far between!

IMG_7895

I’m still not sure whether I buy in to the whole horoscope thing, but it’s always interesting to see what people have to say, and for me it was quite accurate! So let me know, if you’re also a Capricorn tell me if you agree with this hair-o-scope. Hope you’re all doing well guys. The countdown to my holiday is on and I’ve been spending my day off making phone calls and ordering bits I need before I go away in just over a months time – can you tell I’m someone who likes to be prepared?! I do have a makeup look that I want to try out soon which I’ll probably post as an MOTD, so do look out for that.

The Matte Lip Collection – MAC Cosmetics

Hey there!

Well, as Britney used to sing, oops I did it again. I was suckered in by a MAC lipstick collection and this time I couldn’t even blame it on it being limited edition or having extra beautiful packaging! However it is a whole collection of my favourite MAC lipstick finish – the beautiful mattes! I’d seen this collection online since the US obviously got their hands on this collection a little while ago (I’m not bitter, I swear…) and had been waiting with baited breath ever since. I did limit myself to just two shades since in the UK a MAC lipstick will set you back £15.50 each (again, not bitter) So I’ll jump straight in and show you which shades I picked up!

First up is Whirl. MAC already had this shade in their lip liner collection, and with all the hype around the ‘Kylie Jenner lip’ I’m not surprised they created the complimentary lipstick. This shade is a beautiful classic 90’s brown nude, and I love it even more than I thought I would. I do think it is pretty similar to Gerard Cosmetics ‘1995’ (created by Queen Jaclyn Hill), though I must say I much prefer the MAC matte formula. It’s so much smoother and comfortable to wear, whilst still being lovely and matte. I had so many compliments wearing this, and I do think it’ll go with so many eye looks and work for any occasion. Also it looks better in real life and I only got the one selfie, but I just couldn’t wait to talk about these lipsticks!

IMG_7883 IMG_7884IMG_7889

Next is the shade D is for Danger. This is the shade I have been looking for all my life. Seriously. It is a perfect deep berry red shade with a hint of pink to it. I’d say that this is what I wanted from the Rimmel Kate Moss ‘107’ shade, but again the MAC matte formula just blows the Rimmel lipstick out of the water. I’d even go as far to saying that if I could only have one shade for the rest of my life then this would be it. I just thank my lucky stars that this isn’t one of MAC’s limited edition collections. MAC does give but they also taketh away! Again the formula is on point – this lipstick lasts and lasts yet still feels creamy. However I did get a little shock getting to the gym and trying to take it off to find my lips were stained a bright pink! Nothing a little lip scrub won’t take away, and great if you want something super long lasting!

IMG_7890 IMG_7891 IMG_7896 IMG_7897

So there you have it! I’m so damn glad that this is a permanent collection because there’s a long list of shades that I still want to get, and I don’t want my bank account to hate me any more than it already does right now (I’ve been a little spendy getting ready for my holiday! Sorry not sorry.)

Have you tried anything from the matte lip collection, if not, have you got your eye on anything?!

Rediscovering Old Favourites Pt. 2

Hey there!

Recently I shared this post on an old favourite product of mine that I repurchased to try out once again. Whilst it wasn’t quite what I remembered it to be, this time around I really did fall in love again. Today I’m going to be sharing with you the Maybelline Falsies mascara.

I do believe I probably spoke about this mascara on my blog some time ago, but I have gained a fair few followers since then, and really I just had to rave about it all over again. The first time I tried this product was at the recommendation of popular beauty blogger Tanya Burr, who spoke so highly of this mascara that when I was shopping I didn’t hesitate to pick it up. For the most part I feel a little indifferent when it comes to mascaras; I know if I don’t like a mascara, but I’m never like me + this mascara = OTP, but the Falsies is the closest I’ve come.

IMG_7860IMG_7861

The Falsies mascara comes in a few different varieties; the original The Falsies, The Falsies Waterproof, The Falsies Black Drama, and last but not least The Falsies Flared (I think that’s all of them!). Personally I go for the last of the selection because this particular offering comes with the curved brush which I think works best. If the Flared is not available I’ll go for the Black Drama because I’m not 100% sure I remember the two being all that much different if I’m honest. Generally I am terrible at applying mascara and I have rubbish lashes to work with in the first place, so mix those two factors with absolutely zero patience and you have a mascara related disaster just waiting to happen. With the Falsies Flared mascara I feel like I get a nice even coat on my lashes, they never clump up, and it gives both volume and length. It’s also not too ‘wet’ of a formula that you have to wait a week or so before it’s useable, which I really hate in a mascara. I much prefer a natural looking lash to big clumpy thick lashes, and this mascara gives me what I want. Generally I’m much better when I’m wearing eyeliner because, lets get real here girls, it means I can slap it on and if I get it on my lid you’ll never know, but I have done a couple before and after photos so you get the general idea.

IMG_7769 IMG_7771 IMG_7772 IMG_7773

This is just one light coat without the use of an eyelash curler, but I’ve found that if you want to build it up, or top it up later in the day then you’ll have no problem! I also have never had any smudging, transferring or flaking with this mascara, and it’s lasts me even through a twelve hour shift at work.

Overall I bloody love this mascara, and using it again makes me wonder why I ever bothered with any others. I most definitely will repurchase this at some point, whether or not it’s after I’ve finished this tube up (because you know I’m a sucker for marketing and there will probably be another ‘wonder’ mascara that I just have to have) I will have this in my collection again at some point.

So there’s that one then! Once again do let me know if you’ve tried an old favourite product, and whether it was as good as you remembered it to be! I’ll be sure to post more like this in the future if I ever wonder back down old makeup memory lane.

Talk to you later, guys!

Rediscovering Old Favourites Pt. 1

Hey there!

Do you ever think that sometimes old favourites were such loved products for a good reason? Well not long ago I was running out of both foundation and mascara, and decided that now would be a good time to go back and revisit two products that I used to absolutely adore at the time.

This time round the product I’m going to be talking to you about is the Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum foundation in the shade 51 Vanille Clair. It’s described by Bourjois as a ‘gel foundation made from a vitamin-rich fruit therapy formula’ which helps give ‘an even complexion and an instant fatigue result’. I know that a few years ago I adored this foundation, and used nothing but this. But I think the main reason I stopped using it was because it was around the time I discovered Rimmels perfect fair skin shades, and because having tried other Bourjois foundations I’ve found that even the fairest shade leans a little too yellow/orange for me personally. Not only this but I was convinced that they discontinued the Healthy Mix Serum foundation and only offered the regular Healthy Mix foundation – and the thing I loved about the serum version was that amazing texture which made it so effortless to blend. Turns out I must have just gone mad or something because the other week I found this little gem lurking about the drugstore aisles.

IMG_7754 IMG_7755 IMG_7747 IMG_7748Left: Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum ‘Vanille Clair’
Right: Rimmel Match Perfection ‘Light Porcelain’

Having been using this foundation for another week or so I know why I loved it. It really does blend onto the skin just perfectly. It feels light, and with a light but build-able finish it covers what I need it to cover, and does give you that ‘glow’. However, I can also see why I stopped using it. It looks beautiful on my skin, until you compare it to my neck. It really is just too orange for me, and not light enough for my fair but neutral skin tone (#palegirlproblems). If I could have this foundation but in the Rimmel Light Porcelain shade then I recon I could hold my hands up and say that this is a big contender for my holy grail drugstore foundation. But it’s not. Whilst it is comparable to the Rimmel Match Perfection (which if you read my blog you’ll know I love and repurchase time and time again), there’s just something about the Healthy Mix Serum that makes it feel so much nicer – plus it also smells really nice, which is always a little added bonus.

IMG_7751 IMG_7749

You can see that this foundation gives a nice even coverage. It covers up most bits of redness but still requires concealer under the eyes, round the nose and on blemishes, but this is a light coverage foundation and it doesn’t claim to do any more than that! However, like I said before, the big thing is the lack of a fairer, more neutral toned shade, and that’s what breaks it for me. I also don’t think that Bourjois offer particularly dark shades either, so for those of us with skin tones on either end of the spectrum, well this foundation just really doesn’t work for us.

Overall I have been using this foundation, and it works just fine, but I don’t love it like I used to, and I think that’s mostly because I’m better educated on make up and what sorts of foundation I should be using. I will continue to use this for a little while (because it doesn’t look awful) but I think I’ll be picking up something more suited to my skin pretty soon.

So that’s the first little part of me rediscovering some old favourites. Have you ever repurchased a product you loved a while back, and was it as good as you remembered?!

Talk to you soon!

LUSH Leicester Summer Products #LLSP

Hey there!

If you’ve been following my blog for a while now you’ll probably know that I am obsessed with LUSH cosmetics, and luckily for me, I somehow managed to get a job there! And if you are as big of a ‘Lushie’ as I am you’ll also know that with the arrival of the new Oxford Street store, comes a whole load of new products. This past Thursday, my little LUSH store held a bloggers event as a preview to the new release of products which launched yesterday (Friday 7th), and because I’m a fan of all things blogging and social media I jumped at the chance to help work the event.

Thursday was a crazy day. From 9am we were working on last minute prep for the evening; getting goodie bags together, cleaning the party room, merchandising the new products, and making sure everything was ready for when the store closed since we only had an hour to dress the shop! We worked our butts off but boy was it worth it. The whole thing was one of the best times I’ve had since starting work at LUSH.

Downstairs on the shop floor we had all our new products, as well as LUSH cupcakes, refresher drinks, and a prize table for the Instagram competition we were running on the night. Upstairs we had a Comforter making workshop where you could go and make your own Comforter bubble bar for free! Everyone also had the opportunity to buy any products before they launched to the public, and judging by the response from everyone who attended, it was a good night all round. It’s always so refreshing to be able to talk to people who are equally as excited as you are about the products, because let’s face it, some people just don’t want to talk about bath bombs for half an hour! I apologise in advance for the ridiculous amount of photos in this post, but I just couldn’t narrow it down!

IMG_7788 IMG_7789 IMG_7790 IMG_7791 IMG_7792 IMG_7795 IMG_7798 IMG_7799 IMG_7801 IMG_7802 IMG_7804 IMG_7807 IMG_7809 IMG_7816 IMG_7825 IMG_7827 IMG_7828 IMG_7830 IMG_7831 IMG_7833llsp

I definitely would love to do more events like this in the future, and if your local store ever does one then you must make sure you go because it’s such fun! Hope you’re all doing well, and if you’ve seen any of the new LUSH products, let me know; whats your favourite?! If you want to know what everyone else thought of the event, check out the #LLSP hashtag on Instagram and Twitter!
